[ Expecting something worthy of getting the guy's nether regions electrocuted, she blanches when she hears something very unexpected. Sidling next to Korra, she leans on the counter too and opts for a casual tone. ]
[It's not right. How can Asami be so nice to her, after everything? Korra doesn't understand it.
But she's unspeakably grateful. As much as she loves Bolin & Mako, she hadn't realized how much she needs a friend like Asami. How much she's always needed a friend like Asami.
Damn it, she's gonna start crying. She grabs Asami in a hug, as much to hide the tears that are threatening to fall as to show her appreciation.]
[ Planning all the ways she can wound someone with their own cake, Asami's taken aback when she's suddenly supporting one very heavy Avatar, hugging back as surprise melts into affection. Even with the situation concerning Mako hanging between them unspoken, she likes Korra a lot.
It's not as if she's had many real girlfriends before, either. ]
I was so worried that something might've happened to you when I got here. [ Raising a hand, it rubs up and down a back. ] I'll be around as long as you need me.
[Korra eventually pulls back, once she's got her feelings under control. Asami's words remind her of something else she doesn't really want to think about but has to face.]
I didn't find out from the guys -- when are you from? Back home, I mean.
[Please let her be from after the fight with Amon. Korra doesn't want to have to explain about her bending again.]
[ Easing back, her hip finds the counter again. Needing to skirt a few issues, she keeps her rendition of events to the point. ]
Amon had just taken over the city, we were heading into the sewers to escape.
[ Loaning her a curious look, all too aware that she herself is already past Mako and Bolin's mental time-stamps. (It's pretty difficult not to notice as much with the former and the way he's been acting.) ]
[Her arms are crossed again, tight against her chest, trying to hold herself together.]
We beat Amon, but not before he took my bending. Most of it.
[There's a forced cheer in her voice.]
I'm actually able to airbend now! I don't know how or why, but when he took the other elements, he opened up the path to my airbending. Bolin's been helping me train with it. Can't exactly call myself the Avatar now, but it's still pretty cool.
[ Silently curious as Korra wilts, alarm invests in Asami tensely to hear that her bending is gone, all save a penchant for air. Can the Avatar even lose their bending? Of course, she's flesh and blood like anyone else. How was Amon defeated? Why is she pretending not to be in pain?
It's not as if Asami can directly relate as a non-bender, but she knows what it's like to have your entire sense of self ripped away from under your feet, for the world to invert and your stance to become so shaky without that image of who you are to support you that all you want to do is fall down. And Asami isn't even the one famed for representing anything half as important as her friend. ]
Korra.
[ Taking the other girl's hands, she looks at her in earnest. ]
You are still the Avatar. It's easy enough to say you're in one piece and still you, but we'll get you your bending back and fix this. [ Green eyes soften. ] It does need 'fixing', doesn't it? He didn't take away your duties.
What else am I supposed to try? It's not like -- It's not like when you hurt your leg and your muscles need to re-learn how to run. I remember everything. My body remembers everything.
[How does she explain this to a non-bender?}
There are pathways of energy inside us. Benders use these to bend the elements. [She is the worst at explaining this ARGH why isn't Tenzin or Master Katara here?!?] When I try to bend, it's like getting on the road to Republic City, except there isn't a road anymore, just a giant wall.
Then we'll find teachers to guide your bending back to you. Bolin can train with you to earthbend and Mako's got firebending down, as for waterbending ... we'll take them one at a time and figure it out, together.
[ 'Can't call myself the Avatar anymore'. Shakes her head. ]
Toph Beifong's here, isn't she? Well, even if Avatar Aang turned up tomorrow bending the heck out of this place it wouldn't matter. We wouldn't want him.
He could take his bending and he could just ... push off.
[ Lips twitching, because if Avatar Aang actually showed up everyone would be spazzing for weeks. BUT NO, ASAMI WOULDN'T!! She would say excuse you, I have my quota of special snowflakes tyvm. ]
[That isn't -- she totally -- Asami doesn't get it. Of course she doesn't. She's not a bender. Korra wants to resent her optimism, but she can't help snorting when she talks about telling Aang to push off.]
Thanks.
[Korra feels empty. Not in a bad or barren way. It's the kind of emptiness when you've cried too much, even though she hasn't been crying -- when you've poured everything out from inside you and what's left is a cup, waiting to be filled again.
Suddenly, sharply, she wishes she could just bury her face in Naga's fur and sleep.]
I think I'm gonna go lie down for a bit.
[Half-statement, half-question -- she wants to leave, but she doesn't want Asami to think she's running away.]
... Alright. [ A light touch to Korra's arm and she heads to the door. ] I'm going to take a look around the city, I'll see you when I get back. Try not to worry too much, Korra.

He kissed you and ... now you're angry at him?

[But she has to be fair. She doesn't want to be, but she has to be. She kissed Mako that same day, after all...]
I think he might've been cursed...

[ Places a hand on Korra's arm. ]
Who was it? I won't say anything to him if you don't want me to, but I'd feel better knowing which guy is making unwelcome moves on you in the future.
[ So she can put him on her To Be Shanked list. ]

His name is Li. He's just a big idiot.

It can't be fixed. I've tried. Master Katara is the best healer in the world, and there was nothing she could do. It's gone.
[She shakes her head.]
And it's okay. This place isn't home. They don't need the Avatar here.

[ Frowning. Not at Korra, but the stickler of a situation. ]
You're the Avatar for non-benders too. It means more than you think, all anyone would want you to do is try.
